2011 LGANT AGM & Professional Development Conference: “Promoting Leadership – Setting Priorities – Developing Capacity”

It is my pleasure to invite you to our Local Government Administrators of the Northwest Territories Professional Development Conference and Annual General Meeting in Yellowknife form October 25-27, 2011. This year’s theme is: “Promoting Leadership – Setting Priorities – Developing Capacity”

Our annual conference offers an opportunity to local government administrators (town and band managers, SAOs, CAOs and senior administrators) to participate in professional development, network, discuss challenges, issues and common concerns and learn from each other.

This year’s event will be versatile featuring key note speakers, workshops and panel discussions. Here are some of the confirmed highlights:

Professor David T. Siegel from Brock University will speak to the Leadership Qualities of a Successful Municipal Chief Administrative Officer. Professor Siegel is engaged in major research on this subject. Leadership qualities will be discussed with an emphasis on working with council, cooperating with community groups and heading complex organizations with many administrative challenges.
Gordon McIntosh from the LGL Institute will conduct two workshops: “What’s on First Base?” – Priority Setting in Local Government. Emphasis will be on scanning issues and applying decisions leading to setting priorities, followed by identifying problems and assessing options when seeking solutions before developing action plans. “The Capacity Box. – Control what goes, what stays, and how things are done.” Participants will go through an interactive process to examine the service capacity of their municipality and share good ideas with colleagues to define what business are we in, to set priorities versus objectives, to create efficiencies, to take things out of the box and to make the box bigger.
