2009 LGANT AGM Highlights

Brief Highlights

  • 20 delegates representing local community governments in the NWT attended
  • This year sessions and workshops focused on recruitment and retention of senior administrators (CAO's) and other senior positions in local community governments of the NWT. 
  • LGANT President John McKee (SAO, Hamlet of Fort Liard) gave a warm welcome to Local Government Adminstrators of Alberta Director, Doug Topinka (CAO, Town of Athabasca.
  • Public Service Capacity Initiative—discussion took place over work plan of the steering committee including Local Government Administrator Entry Program, Mentorship Program, Community Self-Assessments, Contracted HR Services, Marketing and Communications, and more.  LGANT will be a strong partner in the overall initiative. 
  • As part of the Public Services Capacity Initiative two announcements were made regarding contracted services for all 33 community governments including HR Downloads and Civicjobs.ca. *Please see attached documents to this E-Brief.  
  • A presentation was made regarding the roll-out of the Northern Communities Insurance Program Loss Prevention Incentive Program. 
  • MACA Minister, the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, and Deputy Minister, Mike Aumond, attended a meet & greet luncheon with delegates. 
  • MACA Senior Officials provided an update on Territorial and Federal programs and services.
  • Northern Employee Benefits Services CEO presented information on legislating the pension program.
  • The Forest Management Division of ENR provided an update on current progress with its Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWFPP) process. 
  • LGANT launched a new website at www.lgant.ca.

A common message from President John McKee during the AGM...

Yes – many of our communities are very remote and isolated.  Yes - geographically we are a vast Territory with some of our communities dotting the wide-spread landscape 1,000’s of kilometres away from each other.  Yes – we have different community government structures.  Some of us are cities, towns, villages, hamlets, charter communities, settlements, or designated authorities.  But Together, We Are “33 Strong”!

Travel Assistance Claims due by November 27, 2009

Travel assistance is available to those who attended the conference. Please submit your travel claims with receipts by November 27th in order to be reimbursed.
