Economic development is increasingly being recognized as a way for Aboriginal communities to achieve social and economic prosperity. The course explores:

 Aboriginal Management Practices Level 1 (AFOA 2)

This course provides tools you can use to improve your management practices. The course explores:

 

  • Team building techniques
  • Leadership strategies
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Meeting management

  • Communication strategies
  • Negotiations and Dispute Resolution

 

Aboriginal Program Management (AFOA 3)

Aboriginal program managers need to focus on strategic management and effective decision making in their day to day responsibilities. This course explores:

 

  • The roles and skills required of a program manager
  • Developing policies and procedures
  • Identifying sources of revenue
  • Developing proposals
  • Developing program plans
  • Financial management, reporting and accountability

Aboriginal Management Practices Level 2 (AFOA 4)  

Building on the knowledge acquired in Management Practices Level 1, this course examines macro-management and governance topics. The course explores:

 

  • Roles and responsibilities of Chief, Council and staff
  • Developing policies
  • Strategic management and planning
  • Human resource management
  • Benchmarking and best practices
  • Community relations
  • Financial strategies

FSMA: First Nations Fiscal & Statistical Management Act  

For many First Nations in Canada, moving forward with economic development can be challenging. One challenge is the lack of access to affordable financing for capital projects. The course explores: the First Nations Fiscal and Statistical Management Act (FSMA), the First Nations Financial Management Board (FMB) and identifies how First Nations communities can utilize the FSMA and FMB services to access long-term financing for infrastructure development projects on reserve

Courses start February 6, 2012 and run for 15 weeks.
