Event Type:
Conference
Date:
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 - Thursday, February 16, 2012

AFOA’s 12th Conference will take place at the TCU Place – Saskatoon’s Arts & Convention Centre in Saskatoon, SK from February 14 – 16, 2012.

The theme for the Conference is Competent Financial Stewardship and Public Administration – the Foundation of Good Governance”.

Past AFOA Conferences have focussed on the role of effective management and financial practices in creating successful Aboriginal communities and organizations.  This conference will focus on the connection between management and finance and governance.

There is a growing momentum away from governance under the Indian Act. Aboriginal communities across the country are taking steps to strengthen their own governance practices, systems and institutions.

But what does good governance mean on a day to day basis? What are the building bricks of sound governance? How do the roles of those who are responsible for a community’s administration and financial activities impact the quality of governance?

This conference will look at how financial management and public administration comprise the foundation on which effective governance is built, and how those who are managing a community’s administration and finances must play a significant role in supporting governance.

Our Conference Co-Chairs this year are:

  • Leanne Bellegarde, LLB, Director, Aboriginal Strategy, PotashCorp, and
  • Keith Martell, CA, CAFM, Chairman and CEO, First Nations Bank of Canada
