The Opportunity:  The Town of Fort Smith has an exciting opportunity for a highly qualified individual to take on directorship of the Town’s Recreation Services, Library Services, Visitor Services, Tourism and act as liaison with many Community Organizations.  Reporting to the Senior Administrative Officer, as a key member of the senior management team, the Director will assume complete responsibility for the overall development, formulation and administration of policies and programs to ensure that the operational objectives of Community Services programs are met in a safe and efficient manner. The individual is responsible for the budgets of these functions including development and control of the capital and operating budgets.

 

The Person:  The ideal candidate will be a dedicated recreational professional with a successful track record in a management role within a municipal or similar public sector setting.  He/she will possess excellent management skills including communication skills, human resource skills, report writing and working with volunteers and community groups.  The individual must have a high level of political and corporate knowledge and be able to relate to all levels of employees, government including Town Council and the public. The Director must be conscious of public opinion and sentiment and within the community and be able to respond and react to controversial issues.

 

Qualifications:  The candidate will preferably have graduated from a recognized university or college program in Recreation Administration or related field combined with a minimum of 3 years directly related, progressively more responsible experience in a municipal setting. Equivalent education and experience will be considered.  A strong orientation to service delivery is essential along with the good people skills to lead a team successfully. The incumbent must have an understanding of the northern culture and political environment, a Class 5 Driver’s License, current Standard First Aid and CPR.

 

Hours of Work:  This position works 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday) with a requirement for extra hours due to job demands but is entitled to 10 days annual leave in lieu of overtime.

 

Salary & Benefits:  $ 81,839 – $95,812 subject to qualifications, experience and review.  The Town also provides a Northern Allowance $7,200, annually, comprehensive health & dental benefits and a pension plan provided by Northern Employees Benefits Services.
