9:15am – 10:45am Recruiting the Facebook Generation – Winning the New War for Talent
Speaker: Tod Maffin
Tod Maffin is widely recognized as a leading international authority on the strategic use of social media and how new and emerging technologies are affecting every part of education and business — from human resources to training to mental health. Employee turnover can increase business costs significantly. Turnover is particularly costly when the economy is experiencing a period of low unemployment. This fosters a job-shifting environment, which results in lost productivity and increased recruitment time periods. Therefore it is pertinent that employers attract quality employees and increase retention efforts. Facebook Generation - They’re fickle, media-savvy, highly-connected and living on the cutting-edge of technology. And if your organization still tries to find your future leadership through old-school recruiting techniques like stale ads in papers, there’s a nasty shock in store. Leading-edge firms are harnessing and exploiting the powerful networking forces in social media Web sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to find and recruit the future workforce. In this fast-paced, entertaining presentation, Tod Maffin walks audiences through the minefield of challenges involved in this new world of talent management and delivers invaluable insights into the future generation of workers: where to find them, how to attract them, and, perhaps most importantly, how to keep them engaged, motivated and fully productive.

Due to various pressures, local community governments and the GNWT Departments are experiencing difficulties in attracting and retaining qualified staff. The committee will be presenting a workplan of solutions and projects for mitigating recruitment and retention issues of local community government senior administrators.

3:00 – 4:30pm Taking Crazy Back – A New Roadmap for Mental Health in the Workplace
Speaker: Tod Maffin
With depression rates soaring in the workplace, do we need a radical new way of providing mental health services to our employees? Tod Maffin thinks so. Once the founder and CEO of a multi-million dollar technology firm, Tod’s workload and always-on personality finally caught up with him and over the following years, he was crippled by a devastating depression — all the while struggling to appear to be productive to employers and colleagues, and happy and healthy to his friends and family. In this provocative keynote speech, Tod will reveal to your delegates how this always-connected landscape has seduced all of us into endless multitasking and infinite email, — all the while pretending that this increasing workload is the best thing for “productivity.” And he will outline his own bold strategy for bringing mental health discussion out of the shadows in a way that will challenge your attendees for years to come.

Speaker: Donna Schendel, Canadian Training Resources
Donna Schendel is Vice President of Human Resources for a health care organization with over 1700 employees. Donna sits as a member of the senior Executive team, providing strategic direction and Human Resources expertise within the organization. In her role as Vice President, her mandate is to deliver strategic HR services, collaborating with management, employees and unions to effectively build and maintain the relationships needed to support the organization and employees and to create and maintain a viable and sustainable workforce. Donna is a Human Resource professional who is a motivating and confident leader, trainer and facilitator. She has worked in progressively more senior Human Resource positions, consulting in all areas of people management, employee performance, case management, employee development, conflict resolution, mediation, training and development. Donna received her formal education through the University of Calgary and has her Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designation and more than 15 years experience. She has designed, developed and delivered seminars and workshops, and has been directly involved in consulting, coaching and leadership training. Her passionate presentations infuse a sense of humor and provide a balanced no-nonsense approach to leadership. Employee Retention and Engagement is critical to the long term health and success of your business. Effective strategies to retain great employees can be the single biggest cost savings and business advantage a company can have and is said to be the number one business initiative in most organizations. Workforce planning, to recruit and keep desirable workers should be a key business strategy. When good employees leave, the problem affects your entire organization. The cost of employees turnover has a negative impact on more than your bottom line. Losing good employees affects the morale and performance of your remaining employees which, in turn, increases the risk of losing additional employees. This highly interactive workshop will allow participants to engage in discussion and strategize on effective retention initiatives for their own organization.
