ABOUT US:
The Local Government Administrators of the Northwest Territories (LGANT) is a professional organization comprised of senior administrative staff of community governments in the Northwest Territories.
The Mission of LGANT is to strive for and promote excellence and professionalism in the field of local government administration in the Northwest Territories through education and career development programs and to create awareness of the Community Officer’s role in the community.
The objectives of the LGANT are:
Established in the 1980’s, the organization was formerly known as the Association of Municipal Administrators of the Northwest Territories (AMANWT). In 1999, when Nunavut and the NWT became two Territories, the name of the organization was changed to better reflect the change in community government structures in the NWT. Along with the evolution of community governance in the NWT it was deemed the term “municipal” was no longer an inclusive term and was therefore amended to better reflect the changing times.
LGANT and its predecessor, AMANWT, have been very much involved in the development of training initiatives reflecting the unique needs of community managers in the NWT. They started delivery of the Senior Administrative Officer Certification Program in 1995/96 That training program was adapted and became one of the core training programs for community government staff offered by the School of Community Government. One of the adaptations to the program was to offer additions to the curriculum to make this training meet the needs of Band Managers and Housing Managers within communities.
Members of LGANT have been instrumental to the evolution of governing legislation and current funding structures for community governments in the NWT.
The LGANT organization strives to offer a high level of member support. Initially, this began with administrative support through a contractual arrangement with the NWT Association of Communities. Currently, the organization has a full time “Executive Director” which will more appropriately serve membership needs.
